Introduction
Designing the localized AI personality for Amazon Alexa in the Dutch market.
Amazon Alexa is a global leader in voice AI, but scaling into the Netherlands required more than a literal translation. The objective was to transition Alexa from a formal, foreign-feeling assistant into a culturally authentic companion that feels natively Dutch. My role spanned research across voice AI journeys and target audiences, alongside creative ideation for localized utilities.

"You can just say it in Dutch, you know."
research + strategy
We asked Dutchies their thoughts on voice AIs to understand what would deliver a foundation of trust, relevance and utility.
We kicked off the project by surveying 302 participants across the Netherlands. Their responses to our 18-question survey uncovered deep cultural nuances that directly shaped our strategy. I translated these insights into design opportunities, ideating on localized cultural approaches for Alexa’s core features.
1.
Dutchies think voice AI feels like invasive big tech, constantly listening, and would prefer something more friendly.
This meant that Dutch Alexa should exude familiarity, encouraging Dutchies to invite it into their homes and see that it is always happy to help.
2.
Dutchies value
self-sufficiency, and don’t expect a voice AI to be the answer to their problems.
This meant that Dutch Alexa should epitomize practicality, framing as a handy helper versus an expert assistant.
3.
Dutchies want more than language proficiency; but something that relates to their daily lives.
This meant that Dutch Alexa drops formality and speaks on your level.
We pinpointed three key moments to excel in at launch. This is where we can infuse Dutch Alexa’s personality into daily activities.

"Alexa, what will the weather be like?" - "Shorts weather" - Alexa gets it.
content execution
Dutch Alexa needed a complete understanding of local weather slang, and the ability to give real-time descriptions of the current weather conditions.
I focused specifically on the Dutch weather forecast insight because the Dutch have a unique relationship with the weather. They don’t just check the forecast once a day, they check it every single time they go outside.
Because the Dutch language has over 100 different words for rain and many expressions about the wind. We gave the weather its own design chapter, changing Alexa’s vocabulary to match the exact words and daily habits of Dutch users.
